Faith in God positively influences treatment for individuals with psychiatric illness

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Belief in God may significantly improve the outcome of those receiving short-term treatment for psychiatric illness, according to a recent study conducted by McLean Hospital investigators.

In the study, published in the current issue of Journal of Affective Disorders, David H. Rosmarin, PhD, McLean Hospital clinician and instructor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, examined individuals at the Behavioral Health Partial Hospital program at McLean in an effort to investigate the relationship between patients' level of belief in God, expectations for treatment and actual treatment outcomes.

"Our work suggests that people with a moderate to high level of belief in a higher power do significantly better in short-term psychiatric treatment than those without, regardless of their religious affiliation. Belief was associated with not only improved psychological wellbeing, but decreases in depression and intention to self-harm," explained Rosmarin.

The study looked at 159 patients, recruited over a one-year period. Each participant was asked to gauge their belief in God as well as their expectations for treatment outcome and emotion regulation, each on a five-point scale. Levels of depression, wellbeing, and self-harm were assessed at the beginning and end of their treatment program.

Of the patients sampled, more than 30 percent claimed no specific religious affiliation yet still saw the same benefits in treatment if their belief in a higher power was rated as moderately or very high. Patients with "no" or only "slight" belief in God were twice as likely not to respond to treatment than patients with higher levels of belief.

The study concludes: ." .. belief in God is associated with improved treatment outcomes in psychiatric care. More centrally, our results suggest that belief in the credibility of psychiatric treatment and increased expectations to gain from treatment might be mechanisms by which belief in God can impact treatment outcomes."

Rosmarin commented, "Given the prevalence of religious belief in the United States -- over 90% of the population -- these findings are important in that they highlight the clinical implications of spiritual life. I hope that this work will lead to larger studies and increased funding in order to help as many people as possible."

Party Monster (2003)

Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato produced and directed Party Monster: The Shockumentary in 1998, based on Disco Bloodbath by NYC club kid James St. James, which focuses on the life and murders of fellow club kid and horrifying sociopath Michael Alig. RKO 281 (1999)

In 1999, HBO dramatized the legendary battle faced by Orson Welles in trying to get his masterpiece Citizen Kane completed, facing adversity from his studio (and the person his film was very obviously attacking, newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst). Citizen Kane?s story had been told before, though, in the 1996 American Experience episode The Battle Over Citizen Kane.

Broadcom eyes more smartphone chip sales

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Broadcom's first-quarter results beat expectations and the chipmaker said much of its growth this year would come from selling more components to smartphone makers.

Broadcom's quarterly earnings report pushed the chipmaker's shares up after hours as company executives said they expect their baseband chips to appear in upcoming handsets.

Broadcom, which sells wireless chips used in Apple's iPhone as well lower-end devices popular in Asia, posted first-quarter revenue of $2.01 billion, up 9.7 percent from the year-earlier period.

"Over the course of the year, we should see additional customers in our baseband business," Chief Executive Scott McGregor told analysts on a conference call, of the chips that let cellphones communicate across networks.

Apple on Tuesday reported fiscal second-quarter revenue above expectations, but profit declined for the first time in a decade and CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that Apple's growth rate had slowed.

With investors concerned Apple's expansion may be losing steam, shares of Broadcom had fallen about 1 percent so far in 2013, compared to a 12 percent increase in the Philadelphia Semiconductor index.

Like its competitors, Broadcom is trying to diversify its customer base with more sales to manufacturers including Samsung Electronics , Apple's main rival in smartphones and tablets.

Broadcom's chips integrating wifi and Bluetooth technology are used in Apple's iPhone and other top-tier smartphones and tablets.

The company makes 3G baseband chips used in less expensive smartphones sold in Asia and other emerging markets, and it plans to launch high-speed 4G baseband chips compatible with more advanced networks.

"Their strategy has been to get a foothold at a major supplier and work their way up," said Kevin Cassidy, an analyst at Stifel Nicolaus. "Now they're expanding their footprint."

Broadcom said revenue in the second quarter would be $2.10 billion, plus or minus 4 percent.

Analysts, on average, had expected first-quarter revenue of $1.913 billion and second-quarter revenue of $2.050 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Broadcom reported a net profit of $191 million, or 33 cents per share, compared with a net profit of $88 million, or 15 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted earnings per share were 65 cents, beating the 56 cents expected by analysts.

Shares of Broadcom rose 4.76 percent in extended trade after closing up 1.17 percent at $32.98.

The title of the American band?s latest set of gigs - the Out In Your Town tour ? says it all. Despite their Rock City concert being the final night of a short seven date tour in the UK, a glance at their website shows that wherever in the world you are in 2013, Fun are coming to a venue near you. Their gruelling tour schedule stretches all the way to October although, on the evidence of this show, their energy levels remain pretty high.

Ruess has a stunning voice and the 31 year old leapt around the Rock City stage as if it was his first ever performance. It was an impeccable show from the talented front man, save perhaps for an innocent slight against the city?s most famous retailer (?not good for dental care?, apparently) when recounting an unfortunate incident on the band?s last trip to Nottingham.

Including a handful of songs from their lesser known first album ? the catchy All The Pretty Girls was well received ? this was a well paced set in which the energy levels never dropped, even through more reflective songs such as The Gambler and recent single Why Am I The One?

Unsurprisingly, mammoth hit We Are Young was held back until the encore and I?ve rarely seen Rock City so united in voice. On this evidence, Fun are one more great single away from setting pop music?s world on fire.
