Catherine Grant is on the phone, pleading with me to have a look at the website for the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).

She tells me there is some urgency to this. Hurry. I need to hurry.

?The survey ends Oct. 5,? she says.

?All right.?

?You need to have a look at it now.?

?All right.?

She goes on to say, one more time, how important it is that I have a look at the survey posted on the Champlain LHIN website, the one looking for public input into what sort of health care we want to have in Eastern Ontario.

After I do that, the retired elementary school teacher wants me to get back to her and answer one short question:

?Tell me if it seems as silly to you as it does to me.?

I promise, she makes me promise again, and then I goggle Champlain LIHN.

Now, before I tell you what I found there, here is some background. This is the second Integrated Health Service Plan (IHSP) survey undertaken by the Champlain LHIN, which was founded in 2006, along with the other 13 LHINs in the province.

LHINs were designed to increase efficiency and save valuable health-care dollars. This latest strategic plan will run until 2016.

Of course, an IHSP by an LHIN is not done ASAP. This is serious stuff and requires ?community engagement,? which is people saying what they think about something, although community engagement sounds more professional.

To engage the community the Champlain LHIN will be holding 29 public consultation meetings ? which are meetings with two unnecessary words ? and conducting an online survey.

The Champlain LHIN has an annual budget of $5.3 million, and this community engagement is part of the work it does.

The IHSP survey is therefore not a stand-alone budget item, and there is no way of knowing how much it costs.

So, here is a sampling of the survey questions being asked by the Champlain LHIN. (Each question is basically a statement, to which you are asked whether you agree, disagree, or find yourself somewhere in the middle.)

Statement number one ? ?The Champlain LHIN vision is (to have) healthy communities supported by a high-quality, sustainable health system.?

Tempted to disagree

I know, I know ? you?re tempted to disagree. They should have gone further. Where?s the part about peace in our time and you shouldn?t drown kittens?

For argument?s sake, let?s assume you agree. On to question number two, which is a bit more probing. Do you agree or disagree with this:

?The Champlain LHIN is proposing three broad goals for the next three years. With our health service providers and patient/public, we seek to:

? Improve the health of Champlain residents

? Improve their access to a high-performing health system, and

? Ensure people have a better experience with their care?

Ummm, this one is a bit tougher. Could be some sort of commie plot. I better check out the other questions before I answer.

Which I did, only to discover there are a dozen questions in the survey that are just like the first two ? self-evident, leading, misleading, vague, pointless, meaningless, laughable, self-aggrandizing ? have I mentioned pointless? ? yes, pointless, and all I wanted to do before I was done was scream ? BUY MORE BLEEPING MRI MACHINES!

But I was never asked that.

Chantale LeClerc, the CEO for the Champlain LHIN, defends the survey, saying it is a way of ?engaging with the community.? She also points out the survey lets people make comments.

?You are not limited to the questions,? says LeClerc. ?There is a place for you to make comments. We welcome comments.?

Thank heavens for this, because if you were restricted to just answering the questions you would be transformed into either the world?s greatest curmudgeon or the world?s most drunken Pollyanna.

In truth, most online surveys are rigged to produce the results the survey-taker wants. No one really wants answers, and no one really wants anything specific (like ?Do you want us to spend money on more MRIs??)

What the survey-taker wants is to be able to say they engaged the public, then draw their pay and go home.

Anyway, I had a phone call to make.

?So what did you think,? asked Grant.

?I thought it was ridiculous.?

?Me too! Can you imagine anyone disagreeing with any of those questions??

?I can?t.?

?Are you going to fill it out??

?Nah, I think I?ll just make a comment.?

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) ? Chilean author Isabel Allende has won a Danish literature prize for her "magical and spellbinding storytelling."

The 500,000 kroner ($86,000) Hans Christian Andersen Literature Prize is given to a writer whose works compare with those of the legendary Andersen, who was born in 1805 and wrote about 160 fairytales and poems before his death in 1875.

More than 57 million copies of Allende's books, which incorporate elements of magic and fantasy, have been sold worldwide, most notably "The House of the Spirits," which catapulted her to fame when it was published in 1982.

Prize organizers praised Allende's "mixture of various ages, cultures, forms of knowledge and myths" that have given her storytelling "wingspan and height."

Previous award recipients include Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho and "Harry Potter" creator J.K. Rowling.

First I would like to thank Don Clapper, Vala Ola, and the International Guild of Realism (IGOR) for inviting me to be a guest judge at this fantastic event, and also for giving me an excuse to come to beautiful Carmel, California. I had the privilege of visiting this gallery two years ago when a spectacular painting by IGOR charter member and also ARC Living Master, Duffy Sheridan, placed prominently in the window, pulled us in. Patricia Terwilliger and the Jones Terwilliger Galleries, in the time I have known them, have always been strong advocates for Contemporary Realism and sanity in the arts, and I am sure everyone here and all of IGOR?s members are grateful to them for hosting this exhibition.

As many of you may already know I am Kara Lysandra Ross, and I?m the Director of Operations for the Art Renewal Center, a non-profit educational foundation dedicated to the return of traditional training techniques to the visual arts and the promotion of art education through our scholarships and the support of approved atelier schools which have grown when ARC was founded from 14 schools and only 100 or so students to over 70 schools and over 2,000 students, our workshops. We also supply to the public articles, artist biographies, our ARC Living Master?s gallery, database of now over 80,000 images by artists throughout history and of course our Annual International ARC Salon. This year with the collaboration of groups like IGOR we expect the number of entries to be larger then ever. In addition we have secured extra publicity for our winners of the upcoming 2012/2013 salon with featured articles in The Epoch Times, Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, and Plein Air Magazine. We are accepting entries now through December 31st and would love all of IGOR?s members to participate.

I want to talk a bit today about the importance of art in society, something that for the most part is underestimated. I was in Epcot Center in Disney World last year, and in the Innovations Center they had a computerized survey, which had already been taken by thousands of people. The survey was based on what broad issues or groups the participants thought were going to be the most important and influential in the next 20 years, and out of all the items people could choose from, art was near the bottom in terms of importance. Many people view art as a luxury, something to decorate a home with or simply something for people to view or create for fun or relaxation. In truth, art lies at the core of human existence, and with it has the power to not only influence an individual?s thoughts or beliefs, but can actually shape nations.

As some of you may know I write a monthly column in The Epoch Times, which is a large international newspaper that publishes in 35 countries and 19 languages. This newspaper was founded by Chinese ex-patriots who fled China due to religious persecution. The religion, Falun Gong, which is wide spread with about 100,000,000 practitioners, was developed based on pre-communist traditions in the post Mao era, similar to Buddhism in that it is non violent and is deeply founded in meditation. One of the founders of the newspaper, Dana Cheng, told me that in China they believe in two kinds of weapons. The first is arms, such as guns, bombs and tanks, and the other is Art and Culture. It is as possible to destroy a society by stripping away its art and culture as it is to do so with conventional weapons. This is why in the 1960s and during the rise of Chairman Mao in China, all books on traditional Chinese culture and art were burned, and the paintings and art objects themselves were destroyed. This period is known as the Cultural Revolution and over 10,000,000 people were killed, many trying to protect their heritage. Today the practice of Falun Gong is banned in China and those who practice are imprisoned, and in some cases tortured and killed. Paintings depicting religious Falun Gong images and those that show the wronging of Chinese citizens by the Chinese government are banned, as are paintings of the Red Guard. Some artists who do not wish to stay silent and paint images that are banned in defiance of the laws, know that if they are caught they will go to prison or worse. The winner of the most recent NTDTV art competition is one such example. The painting depicts a Falun Gong member being tortured, and the work already is showing signs of cracking from the conditions required to smuggle the painting out of China. Realist art and literature have the ability to communicate, shaping beliefs and therefore societies, which is why many governments view the arts as something that needs to be controlled. Nothing says more about a culture then the art it idolizes. It represents what it values, what it thinks about, and essentially what it deems worth remembering. Art is the representation of a people, encapsulating its essence on every level. By attacking the art of a culture you attack the culture itself.

China is not the only country that banned art for this purpose. It has been said that the English banned the Scottish bagpipes in the 1700s as a way of attacking their heritage. The Polish press was liquidated, the libraries and bookshops were burned, and their paintings and sculptures destroyed by the Nazi during WWII, and in addition we are told over and over again that many Arab countries view the spread of American art and culture, such as film, painting, and music, as both a threat and an attack of their beliefs and society. Art is indeed a power of its own otherwise it would not be viewed as such a threat.

Much of modern art such as Abstract Expressionism and Dadaism was intended as an attack on society because at its essence it says that the human form, our hopes, dreams, and fears, were not important, that they are not worth painting or sculpting. In an article titled To Create = to Destroy? put out by UCLA, they state that, ?The idea of destruction was built into the ideology of modernism: old culture and its arts have to be destroyed to make room for the new: modernism wants to begin from ?tabula rasa,? or ?point zero.?? The idea of destructing the old was already present in Cubism (Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque): their paintings and collages destroyed the Renaissance tradition? and the modern movement of Futurism was ?a passionate attack on bourgeois society and its values.? Modernism has claimed that their intent was to attack the wealthy, but in actuality they attacked humanity as a whole. You need a lot of education to understand and appreciate an abstract expressionist work, but anyone can recognize and sympathize with an image of a grieving mother or a painting of a beautiful garden. Those things are universal to the human condition. Splotches of paint are just splotches of paint and are nothing but a cynical statement of mankind and its accomplishments which as far as the modernists are concerned amount to nothing more then Duchamp?s fountain, aka a toilet. Modernist leader F. T. Marinetti, who in 1909 wrote the 1st Futurist Manifesto stated, ?We will destroy all museums and libraries, and academies of all sorts; we will battle against moralism, feminism, and all vile opportunism and utilitarianism.? Although the modernists never burned the museums, they did remove most of the fine art from their walls, hiding many of the best works in the basement and in their stead hung canvases painted with solid color, or in some cases nothing at all. Today most modernist works take a fraction of the time that a realist one does and therefore the galleries have a larger inventory to work from. In addition, modernist works bring much higher prices at auction then those by the artists they claimed at the time to be opportunistic.

In an article recently published in the New English Review, titled The Tyranny of Artistic Modernism, Mark Anthony Signorelli writes,?Nothing is so important to the spiritual and mental flourishing of a people as its art. The stories they tell, the buildings they inhabit, the public spaces in which they gather, the songs they sing, the fashioned images they gaze upon, these things shape their souls more permanently and effectively than anything else. We live in a time when the art all around us accustoms men to, and insinuates into their souls, the most erroneous and degrading ideas imaginable about themselves and their world. A humane society can hardly be expected to grow out of such an adverse cultural environment.?

On a more uplifting note, there are also many examples of how the creation of art has impacted societies. Jacques-Luis David, The Death of Marat in 1793, became the symbol of the French Revolution and rallied men to battle against the Reign of Terror. Rembrandt is considered to have changed the way the world viewed depictions of Jesus Christ when in the mid 1600s he painted eight heads of Christ with a non western European look that sent the religious world spinning. Upton Sinclair?s The Jungle played a role in improving working conditions in factories, Elizabeth Thompson?s battle paintings spurred military reform, Uncle Tom?s Cabin helped bring about an end to slavery, and the writings of Dickens and his painter and sculptor counterparts such as Auguste Mulready,J.G. Brown, and William Bouguereau helped bring about awareness of the need to help the poor, to name a few.

I apologize if this has seemed a depressing speech. In reality it is meant to be uplifting in that it hopefully has demonstrated to you the importance of the work you are all doing. So remember, artists play one of the most important roles in our society. And for those who do believe in a higher power, is not the earth or the universe God?s artistic creation? I hope you walk away from this with an extra level of appreciation for the work you do, inspired not to be discouraged when you encounter difficulties. A peek at swirling matter around a giant black hole verifies that it is the source of a monstrous blast of energy thousands of light-years long, researchers say.

Bursts of energy known as relativistic jets spew out matter at close to the speed of light. These jets can travel across an entire galaxy, suggesting they can affect the evolution of the galaxy.

"For a long time, astronomers have theorized that black holes and the matter swirling around them were responsible for the jets we see in some galaxies, but we've never had a telescope with the resolving power to verify this,"said study lead author Sheperd Doeleman, an astronomer at MIT's Haystack Observatory in Westford, Mass.

Now, "by making a virtual Earth-sized telescope that links radio dishes from Hawaii to California, we were able to achieve the necessary magnification power," Doeleman told SPACE.com. [Photos: Black Holes of the Universe]

The researchers used their new array, known as the Event Horizon Telescope, to look at "the base of the famous jet in the galaxy called M87," about 54 million light-years from Earth, Doeleman said.

The center of virtually every galaxy is home to a supermassive black hole?millions to billions of times the mass of the sun. Scientists have long suspected that relativistic jets came from the accretion disks of gas and dust pulled toward these black holes by the black holes' immense gravity, whirling like water flowing around a bathtub drain.

The new array combined data from three observatories in Hawaii, California and Arizona to look at the relativistic jet in M87, which has a central black hole about 7 billion times as massive as the sun and about as wide as the solar system.

The size of the region the relativistic jet originated from matches the estimated size of the innermost stable circular orbit of M87's accretion disk. This area is about five times the size of the solar system, or 750 times the distance from Earth to the sun.

"It is remarkable to me to think that we have the ability to measure the size of the region where matter orbits a black hole just before it disappears from our universe forever," Doeleman said.

Scientists were unsure whether relativistic jets need a spinning black hole to form, and if so, whether they were more likely to arise when accretion disks spin in the same direction as their black holes. The researchers found "the size of the jet launch point was so small that the best explanation is that the black hole has to be spinning and the orbiting matter has to be moving in the same direction as the black hole is spinning ? think of the planets orbiting in the same direction as the sun is spinning," Doeleman said.

"Our result is just the tip of the iceberg," Doeleman added. "We've used just three stations in a global Earth-sized virtual telescope to peer deep inside a relativistic jet. We are about to add critical new stations to this Event Horizon Telescope, which will bring us closer to imaging a black hole boundary than we have ever been before."

The scientists detailed their findings online today (Sept. 27) in the journal Science.

Syrian rebels bombed Army headquarters in Damascus today in the second consecutive day of attacks on government troops and facilities in the city ? underscoring the rebels? ability to carry out assaults on centers of President Bashar al-Assad?s power, despite ongoing targeted strikes by the Syrian Army.

The attack comes just days after the Free Syrian Army (FSA) announced that it was going to move its top officials from Turkey to parts of rebel-held Syria. "The plan is that all the leadership of the FSA will be based in Syria soon, either in Idlib Province or Aleppo Province," a rebel source told Reuters over the weekend.

Though rebels now control parts of Syria, they still face constant air and ground attacks by government forces.

This morning, two large bomb blasts went off in Damascus, according to Information Minister Omran Zoabi. He said one may have gone off inside the military compound, something that could indicate inside help, reports the Guardian. The blasts were felt throughout the city ? with buildings one kilometer (a half-mile) away shaking ?violently? at the force ? and were followed by a ?fierce gun battle,? reports the BBC. Diplomats told the news agency this was the largest explosion they?ve heard in months.

The FSA took responsibility for the attack, and said dozens of people died as a result of the blasts. Syrian officials said, however, that there was only ?material damage.? After the attack, Mr. Zoabi told the Associated Press:

I can confirm that all our comrades in the military command and defence ministry are fine.

The Syrian government often refers to rebel fighters as terrorists. Meanwhile, exiled activist Ammar Abdulhamid interpreted the attack in a very different way:

Assad?s grip over Damascus has become tenuous at best. Rebels are able to conduct bombings and attacks even in the most secured areas aided by informants embedded within Assad?s own security establishment. The battle of Damascus is set to begin at earnest soon, in what promises to be a very bloody development.

The conflict in Syria has been a central theme this week at the United Nations, as world leaders try to find a path toward ending the violence. French President Fran?ois Hollande told the General Assembly that outside military intervention was needed to protect rebel-held zones. President Assad ?has no future among us,? President Hollande said.

President Obama noted in his address to the General Assembly that the future of Syria ?must not belong to a dictator who massacres his people,? and the emir of Qatar called on all Arab nations to form a coalition to intervene in Syria.

?We have used all available means to get Syria out of the cycle of killing, but that was in vain,? the emir, Sheik Hamad Bin Khalifa al-Thani, said in an address to the U.N. General Assembly. ?In view of this, I think it is better for the Arab countries themselves to interfere out of their national, humanitarian, political and military duties and do what is necessary to stop the bloodshed in Syria.?

Though the emir?s proposed military approach goes directly against the UN?s calls for resolving the conflict ? which has killed between 20,000 and 30,000 people according to the UN and watchdog groups ? through mediation and negotiations, it is an approach some say is time to explore 18 months after the increasingly deadly conflict began.

According to USA Today contributor and Truman National Security Project fellow Lionel Beehner, many in the international community seem to approach the conflict through the lens that Assad and his regime are floundering. As Assad gives all he can to hold on to power, the conflict rages on, and ?Some Western policymakers have noted that this could be the desperate tactic of a regime in its final throes,? Mr. Beehner writes. But that ?raises the question: Can Bashar Assad succeed??

Some have assumed that Assad's fall is a foregone conclusion. But few have asked: What if he succeeds? Barring a major intervention, the balance of power will likely remain in Assad's favor. The Free Syrian Army cannot defend population centers with its current arms or finances. The U.S. has signaled it will not intervene, unless Assad uses chemical weapons, an unlikely scenario. The longer civil wars drag on, the more likely the government prevails.

After the success of the troop surge in the Iraq War, Americans seem to believe that winning hearts and minds is the sole path to victory in counterinsurgencies. But most autocratic regimes care little about winning over populations. They care about eradicating the enemy and remaining in power. Indeed, an Assad stalemate would be catastrophic?. It would embolden Assad, and push his regime even further into the hands of Iraq and Iran, which would further divide the Arab world along sectarian lines. Finally, it would provide a dangerous template for future regimes dealing with popular uprisings: Just hold out long enough, employ indiscriminate force and victory will be assured.

The use of such indiscriminate violence by the Assad regime suggests the civil war in Syria has entered a new stage. While this kind of counterinsurgency could widen the opposition and draw more opprobrium from abroad, this might not be enough to unseat Assad, short of a Libya-style intervention. Hence, Washington would be wise to have a plan in place should Assad win the war.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2012 A new episode in the American Chemical Society's (ACS') popular Prized Science video series features insights into the effects of wind-blown dust on human health and climate from Vicki Grassian, Ph.D. She has jokingly been called "the Dust Queen" and is a noted authority on the tiny particles of sand and dirt, termed mineral dust, that are transported from areas as remote as the Sahara Desert.

The video, produced by the ACS, the world's largest scientific society, is available at www.acs.org/PrizedScience and by request on DVD. Prized Science Vicki Grassian: Making Sense of Atmospheric Dust is the newest episode in the 2012 Prized Science series, which features the science behind some of ACS' national awards.

ACS encourages educators, schools, museums, science centers, news organizations and others to embed links to Prized Science on their websites. The videos discuss scientific research in non-technical language for general audiences. New episodes in the series, which focuses on ACS' 2012 national award recipients, will be issued periodically.

Grassian received the 2012 ACS Award for Creative Advances in Environmental Science and Technology. She is an F. Wendell Miller Professor at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The award, sponsored by the ACS Division of Environmental Chemistry, recognizes Grassian's research on the role of mineral dust in atmospheric chemistry, climate and health and on developing better models depicting its likely effects. For example, Grassian discovered that nitrous oxide which may be a more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide can form during chemical reactions on the surface of dust particles. Grassian explains that dust in the atmosphere also is linked to respiratory and heart diseases.

Previous episodes in the 2012 series featured Robert Langer, Sc.D., and Chad Mirkin, Ph.D. ACS recognized Langer for pioneering work in making body tissues in the lab by growing cells on special pieces of plastic. Mirkin's research is providing patients with faster diagnoses for influenza and other respiratory infections and new tests that improve care for heart disease.
