CSN: RG3 to undergo surgery for torn LCL

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will undergo surgery tomorrow to repair a torn LCL in his right knee, and at that time, noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrew will also determine how much damage has been done to the ACL, Comcast SportsNet?s Chick Hernandez confirmed Tuesday evening.

It?s believed that Griffin was examined by Andrews in Pensacola, Fla., earlier in the day. No timetable has been given for RG3?s recovery, but Hernandez reported via Twitter: ?The LCL appears to be worse than first MRI suggested.?

Griffin appeared to tweak the knee in the first quarter of Sunday?s 24-14 playoff loss to the Seahawks and seemed to be in some discomfort for the remainder of the contest. The rookie left the game for good in the fourth quarter after crumpling to the field in agony, moments after his leg twisted awkwardly as he reached for a low snap.

?That?s crazy,? fullback Darrel Young said Tuesday after learning of the news. ?You don?t ever want to see your leader go down like that.?
?
Young added: ?He?s a tough human being. Yesterday I asked him when he was sitting on the trainer?s table [at Redskins? Park], you going to be all right? He said, ?Regardless of what it is, I?ll be ready come training camp.??

In the 48 hours since the injury, the Redskins have been second-guessed for the decision to leave the face of the franchise in the game despite the injury. The latest news will do nothing to quell the criticism.

Griffin originally hurt the knee on Dec. 9 against the Ravens when a hard hit resulted in a Grade 1 sprain of his LCL. He missed the following week?s game but returned to the lineup in Philadelphia, sporting a heavy duty brace. Griffin was still wearing the brace against Seattle.
