US EPA suspends oil giant BP from new federal contracts over conduct tied to oil spill

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The ageing New York Yankees, struggling to inject youth into their roster, appear poised to sign two of their evergreen core members for one more go-round in a drive for a sixth World Series ring since 1996. Left-handed starting pitcher Andy Pettitte, 40, and all-time Major League Baseball saves leader Mariano Rivera, who turns 43 on Thursday, are reportedly on the verge of signing deals for one last campaign. Those pitchers could well be effective in 2013. Pettitte returned from a one-year retirement last season to go 5-4 with an impressive 2. ...

Cheap Storage, Garage

Cheap Storage Ideas

For most people, a garage happens to be a really cluttered dumping ground where you may choose to put practically anything and everything which you no longer want in your house. In general, it becomes really difficult to find things as and when you require them. Your garage will also become really messy. Using some really cheap ideas, you will be able to make your garage look quite tidy. You may even be able to make room for a car.

Conduct a Garage Sale

Holding a garage sale happens to be one of the best ways to increase storage space. Get rid of all unwanted items for a weekend sale in your front yard. Get the neighbors involved in order to turn it into a really big event. It will make it really easy for you to organize the rest of the items. Some extra money can be made in the process.

Create Item Zones

You need to group like items into item zones. For instance, one area of the garage may be used solely for sporting goods. Another area may be used for automotive supplies and a third area may be used for gardening tools. You must keep the gardening items near a side door or the garage opening which allows easy access during really warm months.

Install Shelves

You are well advised to purchase inexpensive shelves for the garage walls or you need to make your own. You have to place smaller items in cardboard boxes and keep it on the shelves. Get them labeled so as to identify the contents. The lesser items you have on the floor, the more room you will have for bigger things

Make Use of the Ceiling

Cheap Storage, Garage

Cheap Storage Ideas

You need to use garage?s ceiling in an attempt to create additional floor space. You may use inexpensive hooks in order to hang items like bicycles, ropes, step ladders and cords safely during the winter months

Mobilize the Trash

If trash cans are kept in the garage, use those which have wheels it will be easier for you to create more storage space. If you store cans along the garage wall, you need to place additional shelving above the cans to use that space.

This discussion on cheap storage spaces ends here.

S.Africa's Adcock profit falls on loss of drugs

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African drugmaker Adcock Ingram reported a worse-than-expected 9 percent fall in annual earnings, hit by the loss of high-margin drugs.

The country's second-largest drugmaker has struggled in recent months after losing three drugs that contributed as much as 200 million rand in sales due to safety reasons. Its failure to win a bigger share in the government HIV/AIDS drugs supply contract added to the headwinds.

Adcock said diluted headline earnings per share - the main profit gauge in South Africa - totalled 422 cents in the year to end-September, from 465 cents a year earlier.

The results fell short of the 430 cents forecast by StarMine's SmartEstimate, which gives more weight to forecasts from top rated analysts.

"Disappointing set of results that reflect a weak pricing power," Jean Pierre Verster, an analyst at 360ne Asset Management. "It also continues to show the impact of the loss of key drugs and lower anti-retroviral drugs volumes."

South African health authorities granted drug manufacturers a 2.14 percent drug price increase for certain prescription drugs in March this year, a hike analysts say did not keep up with the rising cost of imported raw materials due to a weaker rand.

Shares in the company dropped 2.9 percent to 53.15 rand by 1357 GMT, on course for the biggest daily percentage decline in more than five months and underperforming a slightly higher JSE All-share index.

The company said sales were largely flat at 4.6 billion rand, but it raised its final dividend by 8 percent to 115 cents per share.

Shares in Adcock are down nearly 12 percent so far this year, far behind its closest rival Aspen Pharmacare, which has surged more than 60 percent.

The Midrand-based company, which aims to earn more than 30 percent of its sales outside South Africa in three years, has been dwarfed by Aspen, which has made an aggressive push in overseas markets such as Australia.

Adcock recently agreed to pay $86 million to buy a portfolio of drugs and a distribution network from India's Cosme Farma to bulk up its presence in that country's $16 billion pharmaceutical market.

Adcock's small operations in Ghana and Kenya reported no growth in sales over the period, hit by safety recalls due to illegal distribution of fake products and factory upgrades.

Syrian planes bomb olive press, many killed

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian warplanes bombed an olive press factory in the country's north on Tuesday, killing and wounding dozens of people, including farmers who were waiting to convert their olives to oil, activists said.

Two activist groups ? the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees ? say the factory is west of the city of Idlib. The LCC says at least 20 people were killed and many others wounded in the raid, while the Observatory said "tens were killed or wounded."

Both groups depend on a network of activists on the ground around the country.

President Bashar Assad's regime has been launching intense air raids on rebels in recent months, mostly in Idlib, the nearby province of Aleppo, Deir el-Zour to the east and suburbs of the capital Damascus.

The most recent air raids have killed hundreds of people, including eight children on Sunday in the village of Deir al-Asafir near the capital Damascus.

Olive oil is a main staple in Syria. Tens of thousands of tons are produced annually.

Fadi al-Yassin, an activist based in Idlib, told The Associated Press by telephone that dozens of people had gathered to have their olives pressed when the warplanes struck, causing a large number of casualties.

It was not immediately clear why the olive press was targeted. "It was a massacre carried out by the regime." said al-Yassin.

"Now is the season to press oil," said al-Yassin, noting that since many olive press factories are not functioning in the area because of the fighting in the region. A large number of people were at the one near the city of Idlib.

"Functioning olive press factories are packed with people these days," he said.

The Observatory also reported heavy fighting on the southern edge of the strategic rebel-held town of Maaret al-Numan, captured from government troops last month.

The town is on the highway that links the capital, Damascus, with the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, a commercial center that has been the scene of clashes between rebels and troops since July.

The Observatory and al-Yassin said air raids on Maaret al-Numan killed at least five rebels.

Syria's conflict started in March 2011 as an uprising against Assad's regime, but quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

On patrol with a shark ranger in Indonesia

Conservation International works with Indonesian children to help them learn how to protect the most diverse underwater region in the world. ?NBC News' Richard Engel reports.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

RAJA AMPAT, Indonesia ? The remote Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat is home to an underwater treasure trove of coral reefs and tremendous biodiversity, miles away from polluted urban centers and human encroachment.

The faraway islands in Western Papua, regarded by many marine experts as having the potential to help restore the world's ailing coral reefs, are vulnerable to the unchecked exploitation of a lucrative treasure that is rapidly disappearing from Indonesia's waters: sharks.

China's growing appetite for the de rigueur shark fin soup has attracted fishermen from elsewhere in Indonesia and Southeast Asia to the waters around Raja Ampat's 1,500 islands.

Alarmed, conservationists and local villagers worked together to create the Misool Eco Resort and Conservation Center in 2005, establishing a 165-square-mile "No-Take Zone" that banned fishing.

When a neighboring village requested to take part, the area was expanded to 472 square miles, roughly the size of the city of Los Angeles.

The Misool team also recruited a group of rangers to help patrol the waters for illegal fishermen. Earlier this year, NBC News had an opportunity to go on patrol with Abdul Razak Tamher, 31, one of the first rangers.

Q: Before 2005, what were shark and fish stocks like in this area of Raja Ampat?

A: Before 2005, one of the main occupations of the people of my village was fishing. That's what we did every day and one of the big things fished were sharks. By the 2000s there were very few sharks left in the area, but in the 1980s and 90s when I was fishing there were lots of sharks. A lot of people used dynamite and potassium cyanide for fishing.

Q: So did villagers in Misool know they had to change the way things were done?

A: At that time, people here really didn't think much about shark or marine conservation. We didn't know shark fishing was illegal (prior to the formation of the No-Take Zone in 2005, the local governor had actually signed a law against shark fishing) because nobody from the government came out here to tell or educate us that it was illegal and bad for the ecology to fish sharks.

It was really through the efforts of the resort to educate the village about the importance of sharks and protecting the marine environment that we saw the importance of it and began to appreciate the natural beauty ourselves. Now if people from my village hear of a shark fishing boat coming into this area, they get really upset.

NBC News' Richard Engel talks to a Conservation International scientist as he identifies a new species of fish.

Q: Is conservation a completely foreign idea here? Isn't there a long tradition of seasonal fishing and spiritual beliefs around protecting certain animals?

A:?We've embraced principles of conservation since the beginning of our culture. They were simple ideas, but they still worked for us. For example, we would harvest clams from the ocean for six months, then depending on the ocean conditions, we would close that area for sometimes up to a year before harvesting again.

Many of the original families in this area are forbidden to eat different sea creatures like sharks or turtles or other kinds of fish. In each case, there is a reason why each family respects and protects a certain animal. It could be that a family member or fisherman generations ago was rescued by that species or guided to land at a time of need. Many still believe that if someone in the family breaks this taboo, they will get sick or something bad will happen.

Q:?In 2006, the rangers were formed with just five of you and a few of you were actually former shark fishermen. What made you make such a dramatic change in your life?

?A:?I personally wasn't involved in shark fishing, but other original rangers that were here in the beginning and their village elders were shark fishermen. Even though they were shark fishermen and lived off the harvest of the ocean, they realized that they needed to preserve this area and the marine life for future generations to come.

Many of us felt ? and still feel today ? that if we told our children or grandchildren that there were lots of fish and sharks in the sea around these islands and they went there and saw none they would think that we were liars and we just couldn't allow that to happen.

Q:?What was it like in the early days with the rangers?

A:?The rangers weren't really effective until 2009 because at that time there was only one speed boat that was always busy getting lumber for the construction of the resort. So we would only go out if we saw an illegal boat go past the resort. From 2006-2009, we went out almost every day. In the months of June and July, the area was choked with shark finning boats from as far away as Java that cast long lines with sometimes 1,000 or 2,000 hooks to catch sharks.

To expel the foreign boats, it wasn't a problem. We would just go up to the boats and tell them leave and they would go. Local fishermen were tougher. Most of the problems had to do with local fishermen not agreeing with the contract we signed with Misool Eco Reserve to create the no-take zones or claiming they were not around when the contract had been reached. They would also say we have it easy since we work as rangers and make a lot of money, so we don't need to fish like they did.

Q:?How soon after the reserve formed did you start to see results from the sanctuary?

A:?After two or three years, I started to see a lot of sharks in the lagoons and my friends who went diving began to see more fish. There were just some researchers here in Misool who were shocked by the amount of fish who were in the protected areas. The results have just been amazing.

Q:?How have the villages in the area adapted to the sanctuary?

A:?In the beginning, there were a lot of problems with the villagers not understanding the rangers' mission. The most important thing we did to get people behind us was to use Adat, or traditional Papuan village law. This was done by developing a close relationship with the ancestral village head, as he holds the power of the village and so people will listen to what he says. If we didn't have the village head, then it would have been difficult to enforce the rules of the sanctuary.

Q:?What's next for the rangers in the coming years?

A:?We all hope the ranger patrol can continue forever and that we have the resources to keep recruiting young people from the villages to the patrol. We now have three ranger stations built and we hope to have three rangers in every station with small, fuel-efficient boats that can be used to spot illegal fishermen and intercept them until support can show up.

The other big problem we'd like to fix is communication. Radio communication in this region of Raja Ampat is difficult because all the radios we have now are line-of-sight and the islands interfere with signal within short distances. The plan is to build a main radio/repeater station that will cover the entire area so that there is clear contact throughout the sanctuary.

Birth control pills should be sold over-the-counter (OTC), according to the nation?s leading group of obstetricians and gynecologists.

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) said in a statement this week that the move would reduce an unacceptably high rate of unintended pregnancies that costs taxpayers about $11.1 billion each year. About half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unintended.

Health.com: 16 Worst Birth Control Mistakes

Other countries sell birth control pills without a prescription, including Jamaica, Mexico, Kuwait and Thailand.

Birth control pills do have some risks, including a small chance of a blood clot, but these risks don?t outweigh the benefits, says ACOG.

?Nothing in life is without risk,? says Jill Rabin, MD, chief of ambulatory care, obstetrics and gynecology and head of urogynecology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, NY, who supports the move.

?In pregnancy, women produce more estrogen and progesterone than when they take a birth control pill,? she says. ?If you have a reproductive-age woman who doesn?t want to be pregnant either by choice or for a medical reason, it?s safer to take the pill rather than get pregnant.?

Health.com: 12 Types of Birth Control

Some questions remain unanswered though, including a big one about cost.

Thanks to President Obama?s Affordable Care Act, contraception?including birth control pills?is free for women who have employer-sponsored insurance (although woman may have a co-pay for some branded drugs, and those without insurance are out of luck).

Would making birth control pills available over-the-counter shift the bill back to women? Most insurance companies don?t cover non-prescription drugs, so it?s unclear who would pay if the pill was sold at the local pharmacy without a prescription.

And then there?s the question of whether a shift from prescription to over-the-counter status of birth-control pills would ever actually happen. Dr. Rabin, for one, believes it has ?a good chance of happening,? given the experience in other parts of the world.

Health.com: Birth Control For Women Over 30

While there are concerns that women who shouldn?t be taking the pill for health reasons might do so anyway if the drugs were available over-the-counter, research suggests this is unlikely, according to ACOG. Another concern?that women will skip important health checkups if they don?t have to see their doc for a prescription?also doesn?t hold up, they said.

Surveys have shown that women are able to ?self-screen? to determine if they are at higher-than-average risk for side effects. Pharmacists, too, were able to screen out inappropriate candidates using check lists.

In other countries where the pill is already available over-the-counter, studies show women still get their annual gynecological check-ups.

?Oral contraceptives have been out for many, many, many years in this country,? said Gerald F. Joseph, MD, ACOG?s vice president, practice activities, in a statement. ?And although no drug is perfectly safe, even aspirin has its side effects, that oral contraceptives are a relatively safe drug, the benefits far outweigh the risks.?

Reasons to Hire a Professional Wedding Photographer

Though wedding is a beautiful and long-awaited event, it is also very busy and stressful. Indeed, there are lots of things to keep in mind and arrange in order to have unforgettable celebration. If you miss even the smallest thing, the whole celebration may be messed up.

One of the main things of wedding planning is the choice of photographer. If you forget to hire a professional photographer, all other preparations will become vain, because you will have no memories. You will have no pictures to show to your friends or relatives that were not present at your wedding. Besides your children will not be able to see how young and beautiful you were. Having wedding pictures is very important, because these are the best memories of your happy day. They will remind you of your special day long after the wedding dress is pushed to the back of your closet.

Though lots of people still ask their relatives or friend to take photos and capture the most remarkable moments of the wedding ceremony, it is always better hiring a professional photographer. The difference between the photos made by photographer and amateurs is huge. Only a professional can make amazing and unique photos that will not let you forget about that special day. Though the services offered by a professional photographer will cost you additional money, these expenditures will allow you to have the best memories that you can share with your friends, children and even grandchildren.

The right choice of a photographer is very important. There are many wedding photographers that claim to be professional, but when you see their pictures you understand that their works do not meet your expectations and requirements. In other words, the right choice of a wedding photographer is as important as the choice of a wedding gown. Thus, if you want to have quality pictures, depicting the true atmosphere of your wedding it is recommended to start looking for a professional photographer well in advance.

Most professional wedding photographers have websites where they describe the services they offer and demonstrate the samples of their works. Thus, start looking for your wedding photographer online. Never be in a hurry, because rush decisions may turn in to a huge disappointment and waste of money.

To make the right choice you will need to invest time in a decent online research. Take time to surf the Internet and to compare services offered by different photographers. While examining their portfolios, pay attention to the creativity and lightning exposure of the offered photos. If you like the pictures you can contact a photographer to get additional information about the services he/she offers and to discuss the details of the upcoming wedding.

About the Author

Before making a final decision you need to make sure you feel comfortable with the photographer and that he/she listens to what you want. To get more information about the photographer you consider hiring you may read customer reviews. It is also recommended visiting forums where people share their opinions and give helpful recommendations.

Magnesium oxide: From Earth to super-Earth

Friday, November 23, 2012

The mantles of Earth and other rocky planets are rich in magnesium and oxygen. Due to its simplicity, the mineral magnesium oxide is a good model for studying the nature of planetary interiors. New work from a team led by Carnegie's Stewart McWilliams studied how magnesium oxide behaves under the extreme conditions deep within planets and found evidence that alters our understanding of planetary evolution. It is published November 22 by Science Express.

Magnesium oxide is particularly resistant to changes when under intense pressures and temperatures. Theoretical predictions claim that it has just three unique states with different structures and properties present under planetary conditions: solid under ambient conditions (such as on the Earth's surface), liquid at high temperatures, and another structure of the solid at high pressure. The latter structure has never been observed in nature or in experiments.

McWilliams and his team observed magnesium oxide between pressures of about 3 million times normal atmospheric pressure (0.3 terapascals) to 14 million times atmospheric pressure (1.4 terapascals) and at temperatures reaching as high as 90,000 degrees Fahrenheit (50,000 Kelvin), conditions that range from those at the center of our Earth to those of large exo-planet super-Earths. Their observations indicate substantial changes in molecular bonding as the magnesium oxide responds to these various conditions, including a transformation to a new high-pressure solid phase.

In fact, when melting, there are signs that magnesium oxide changes from an electrically insulating material like quartz (meaning that electrons do not flow easily) to a metal similar to iron (meaning that electrons do flow easily through the material).

Drawing from these and other recent observations, the team concluded that while magnesium oxide is solid and non-conductive under conditions found on Earth in the present day, the early Earth's magma ocean might have been able to generate a magnetic field. Likewise, the metallic, liquid phase of magnesium oxide can exist today in the deep mantles of super-Earth planets, as can the newly observed solid phase.

"Our findings blur the line between traditional definitions of mantle and core material and provide a path for understanding how young or hot planets can generate and sustain magnetic fields," McWilliams said.

"This pioneering study takes advantage of new laser techniques to explore the nature of the materials that comprise the wide array of planets being discovered outside of our Solar System," said Russell Hemley, director of Carnegie's Geophysical Laboratory. "These methods allow investigations of the behavior of these materials at pressures and temperatures never before explored experimentally."

(AP) ? A Taliban suicide bomber struck a Shiite Muslim procession near Pakistan's capital, killing 23 people in the latest of a series of bombings targeting Shiites during the holiest month of the year for the sect, officials said Thursday.

The bomber attacked the procession around midnight Wednesday in the city of Rawalpindi, located next to the capital, Islamabad, said Deeba Shahnaz, a state rescue official. At least 62 people were wounded by the blast, including six policemen. Eight of the dead and wounded were children, said Shahnaz.

Police tried to stop and search the bomber as he attempted to join the procession, but he ran past them and detonated his explosives, said senior police official Haseeb Shah. The attacker was also carrying grenades, some of which exploded, said Shah.

"I think the explosives combined with grenades caused the big loss," said Shah.

Local TV footage showed the scene of the bombing littered with body parts and smeared with blood. Shiites beat their heads and chests in anguish.

"It was like the world was ending," said one of the victims, Nasir Shah, describing the blast. He was being treated at a local hospital for wounds to his hands and legs.

Earlier Wednesday, the Taliban set off two bombs within minutes outside a Shiite mosque in the southern city of Karachi, killing at least one person and wounding several others, senior police official Javed Odho said.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attacks in Rawalpindi and Karachi.

"We have a war of belief with Shiites," Ahsan told The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location. "They are blasphemers. We will continue attacking them."

The Sunni-Shiite schism over the true heir to Islam's Prophet Muhammad dates back to the seventh century.

Shiites are currently observing the holy month of Muharram. On Saturday, Shiites will observe the holiest day of the month, Ashoura, which commemorates the seventh century death of Imam Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.

The country has a long history of sectarian violence carried out by both extremist Sunni and Shiite Muslims against the opposite sect. Most attacks in recent years have targeted Shiites, who make up a minority in the overwhelmingly Muslim country.

The Pakistani government increases security every Muharram to protect Shiites. But attacks regularly occur, and activists criticize the government for not doing enough to safeguard the minority sect.

Opera boss to become new BBC director-general

LONDON (Reuters) - The new BBC director-general is to be the current chief executive of the Royal Opera House, Tony Hall, BBC television news said on Thursday.

Hall, a former director of BBC news, will replace George Entwistle who resigned earlier this month after just 54 days after failing to get to grips with a child sex abuse scandal that has thrown the 90-year-old state-funded broadcaster into turmoil.

BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten said Hall was "the right person to lead the BBC out of its current crisis".

His journalism experience would be "invaluable as the BBC looks to rebuild its reputation", Patten added in a statement to staff quoted on the BBC's news website.

"The past eight weeks have been very traumatic for the BBC but this is a significant day ... (that) marks the beginning of a new phase.

"The key challenge will be re-establishing our reputation with the public. I hope you will all support Tony Hall as he goes about the important work of doing just that."

Hall is expected to take up his position in March.

Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner

Once you slide into the post-Thanksgiving food coma, the idea of reprising the meal loses just a bit of its luster. After a round of turkey-and-cranberry sandwiches on Black Friday, the remaining leftovers ? and yes, there are bound to be some ? look even less appealing.

We?ve had a few bright ideas?for repurposing Thanksgiving leftovers.

This year, we asked chefs, food bloggers and other experts for their best recipes to reinvent Thanksgiving leftovers. Six to try:

Candied Sweet Potato Soda

Portland restaurant The Original Dinerant makes this unique drink from scratch using sweet potatoes, marshmallows and other ingredients. You can also use leftover candied sweet potatoes in lieu of sweet potatoes.

Blend in a mixer, and then strain.?To make soda, add soda water to taste to three ounces of the puree. For a hot toddy, add an ounce of bourbon and hot water to taste.

Turkey Shepard?s Pie

?It?s one of my favorite leftover Turkey dishes besides the humble warm turkey sandwich, says Jason McLeod, executive chef of Consortium Holdings, whose San Diego, Calif., properties include Craft & Commerce, Neighborhood and Underbelly.

Start by shredding leftover turkey meat.?Chop leftover vegetables. Heat the turkey and vegetables in a large pot. Add leftover gravy and mix well.

Add your choice of seasoning ? McLeod uses chipotle powder, garlic powder and onion powder. Place the mix in casserole dish and cover with leftover mashed potatoes.

Bake in oven at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes. Serve with leftover cranberry sauce.

Basic Turkey Jerky

If you have a dehydrator, turn leftover turkey into a dried snack with this recipe from Excalibur Dehydrators.

Coat thin strips of turkey with a little olive oil and a few seasonings to taste.?Place strips on the dehydrator tray, making sure that they do not touch each other.

Set the temperature for 140 degrees. Cook 6 to 12 hours, checking hourly until the inside of a slice has no moisture at all and is the same color throughout.

Thanksgiving Eggs Benedict

Sullivan?s Steakhouse?in Austin, Texas, turns leftover turkey into a brunch standby.

To make, set aside two to four slices of turkey, a scoop of stuffing and an ounce or two of gravy per person. Heat each component in a microwave until?warm.

Split an English muffin per person and then toast. Scoop stuffing on top?of each side of the English muffin.?Top stuffing with slices of reheated turkey.

Bring two cups of water and a teaspoon white vinegar to a simmer in a small saucepot. Crack two?eggs, then drop into the simmering water and poach for 2-4 minutes.

Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel. Set an egg on top of each muffin half.

Ladle gravy over each poached egg.?Spoon a little cranberry sauce on the plate.

Candied Yam Bread Pudding

No pumpkin pie left? No problem. Chef Derek Simcik, executive chef of Chicago?s Atwood Caf?, makes a dessert from leftover sweet potatoes and bread.

First, butter a deep pan. Tear 12 ounces of leftover bread into chunks and place in a large bowl. Pour a quart of heavy cream over the bread and set aside until soft.

Beat three eggs and five ounces sugar until smooth and thick. Add a half-ounce of vanilla, an ounce of melted butter, and two ounces of brandy.

Gently toss together the egg mixture, the bread and four to five ounces of candied yams. Pour into pan and bake at 350 until browned and almost set, about 45 minutes.

Thanksgiving Monte Cristo

?For a lighter version, pan fry this recipe instead of deep-frying,? says Katherine Humphus, executive chef of BO-beau kitchen + bar and100 Wines Hillcrest in San Diego, Calif.

To make, form two patties out of leftover stuffing, with gravy mixed in for moisture. Make a sandwich using the stuffing patties as ?bread,? placing turkey, mashed potatoes and some green bean casserole in between.

Close patties around the filling. Bread each with flour and egg. Deep fry until golden brown and hot in the center, and enjoy with side of cranberry sauce.

Rihanna?s Healthy Eating & Diet Tips

Rihanna's diet and exercise

thestyleandbeautydoctor.com

Rihanna has been working with celebrity personal trainer Harley Pasternak and follows his Five Factor diet plan. Instead of the traditional three meals a day, Pasternak suggests eating 5 small meals throughout the course of the day.

Each of these meals must have five essential components: protein, fiber, healthy carbs (fruits and vegetables), a healthy fat (avocado, nuts etc.), and a sugar-free drink such as water or tea.

On the Five Factor plan, dieters are also allowed a ?cheat day? once a week. Pasternak says the cheat day helps keep his clients on track with the health and fitness goals.

In an interview with Fabulous magazine, Rihanna revealed what she would eat in a typical day:

?I have egg whites and pineapple for breakfast with hot water and lemon. For lunch I have fish and potatoes. I hate vegetables but I make myself eat them. For dinner I have fish again.?

Overall, Rihanna tries to stay away from refined carbohydrates and red meat to maintain her 133 pound figure. But does size matter to this sexy singer? ?My size varies,? she told Fabulous magazine, ?sometimes I?m a 2, sometimes 4 ? but what matters is being fit and healthy.?

Previously discarded, human-specific 'junk' DNA represents untapped resource in the study of diseases like Alzheimer's and autism

Short snippets of DNA found in human brain tissue provide new insight into human cognitive function and risk for developing certain neurological diseases, according to researchers from the Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The findings are published in the November 20th issue of PLoS Biology.

There are nearly 40 million positions in the human genome with DNA sequences that are different than those in non-human primates, making the task of learning which are important and which are inconsequential a challenge for scientists. Rather than comparing these sequences strand by strand, Schahram Akbarian, MD, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, wanted to identify the crucial set of differences between the two genomes by looking more broadly at the chromatin, the structure that packages the DNA and controls how it is expressed.

They found hundreds of regions throughout the human genome which showed a markedly different chromatin structure in neurons in the prefrontal cortex, a brain region that controls complex emotional and cognitive behavior, compared to non-human primates. The findings of the study provide important insights for diseases that are unique to humans such as Alzheimer's disease and autism.

"While mapping the human genome has taught us a great deal about human biology, the emerging field of epigenomics may help us identify previously overlooked or discarded sequences that are key to understanding disease," said Dr. Akbarian. "We identified hundreds of loci that represent untapped areas of study that may have therapeutic potential."

Dr. Akbarian and his research team isolated small snippets of chromatin fibers from the prefrontal cortex. Next, they analyzed these snippets to determine what genetic signals they were expressing. Many of the sequences with human-specific epigenetic characteristics were, until recently, considered to be "junk DNA" with no particular function.

Now, they present new leads on how the human brain has evolved, and a starting point for studying neurological diseases. For example, the sequence of DPP10a gene critically important for normal human brain developmentnot only showed distinct human-specific chromatin structures different from other primate brains such as the chimpanzee or the macaque, but the underlying DNA sequence showed some interesting differences from two extinct primatesthe Neanderthal and Denisovan, most closely related to our own species and also referred to as 'archaic hominins'.

"Many neurological disorders are unique to human and are very hard as a clinical syndrome to study in animals, such as Alzheimer's disease, autism, and depression," said Dr. Akbarian. "By studying epigenetics we can learn more about those unique pieces of the human genome."

The research team also discovered that several of these chromatin regions appear to physically interact with each other inside the cell nucleus, despite being separated by hundreds of thousands of DNA strands on the genome. This phenomenon of "chromatin looping" appears to control the expression of neighboring genes, including several with a critical role for human brain development.

"There is growing consensus among genome researchers that much of what was previously considered as 'junk sequences' in our genomes indeed could play some sort of regulatory role," said Dr. Akbarian.

This study was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Akbarian plans to do more epigenetic studies in other areas of the brain to see if there are additional chromatin regions that are unique to humans. They also plan to study the epigenomes of other mammals with highly evolved social behaviors such as elephants.

Dr. Akbarian joined Mount Sinai in July 2012. He is internationally known for his cutting-edge research on the epigenetic mechanisms of psychiatric disorders. He is a widely recognized expert in advanced chromatin toolsmany of which were developed in his laboratoryin conjunction with mouse mutagenesis and behavioral models of mental illness to bridge molecular, cellular, and behavioral investigations. He is also a renowned authority on the epigenetic analysis of human brain tissue examined postmortem.

Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Akbarian was Director of the Brudnick Neuropsychiatric Research Institute. He received his medical and doctorate degrees from the Freie Universitaet Berlin. Dr. Akbarian completed his postdoctoral training in neuroscience at the University of California at Irvine and the Whitehead Institute, and his residency in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital.
