In our attempts to finally get those pesky, ruthless ants out of our homes, we put some unique ant repellant ideas to the test. A few worked really well (like diatomaceous earth), while many just proved useless and messy (like baby powder).
But thanks to our readers, we now have a ton of new ideas that could actually do the trick. In the slideshow below, you'll find some of the most popular ways that our readers fix this annoying issue. Check out these nifty ideas and try one of the methods to finally get those little buggers out for good.
Cinnamon
Many people raved about cinnamon's effectiveness. Sprinkle ground cinnamon around the outside border of your home and then the inside. It will kill the ants and then eventually stop them from entering, as long as you cover any possible entryway.
Cloves
Placing whole cloves wherever you see ants is an easy fix that's also easy to clean up.
Cornmeal
Cornmeal kills ants by blocking their digestive tracts since they cannot process it. Sprinkle it around your kitchen and outside your home, and the amount of bugs in your home will dwindle.
Avon Skin So Soft
One reader poured a cup of Avon Skin So Soft Oil and water in a spray bottle, shook it up and sprayed the ants on her kitchen floor near the baseboards. She hasn't seen one ant since, and it smelled great!
Grits
Similarly to cornmeal, sprinkling these grains around the perimeter of the house wherever you see ants should do the trick.
Dish Soap
Put a very thin line of dish soap around baseboards, windows, doors and wherever else the ants tend to gather to deter them. Others have had success pouring dish soap directly onto ant hills in their yards. You can also mix the soap with some water in a spray bottle for more effective application.
Splenda
One of our readers swears by Splenda and notes that the best part is it's extremely safe for kids and pets.
Water & Paper Towels
Wet a few paper towels, use them to scoop up the ants and dump them into the sink. Then, wipe up their paths with water as well.
Cucumber Peels
Peel a cucumber and set the peelings out on the kitchen counter. A few readers have used this method and say it is quite effective.
Used Coffee Grounds
Recycle your leftover grounds around doorways, windows baseboards and any other cracks around the house to keep ants away.
Dryer Sheets
Rub infested areas with dryer sheets. Then, fold a few and place them in the cracks where ants enter your home to keep them out.
Comet
One reader uses Comet to repel ants on camping trips, but hasn't tested it yet in her home. A line around the whole camping area acts as a barrier, and might do the same when used in your home.
Windex & Baking Soda
One reader uses this combination of ingredients: Windex and baking soda. Spray ants with Windex. Then, sprinkle baking soda on top. Let set for a day or two, and repeat process each time you see an ant.
Ortho Home Defense MAX
After trying this ant repellant, one reader claims it works like magic and has solved her ant problem.
DuPont Advion Ant Gel
Although this remedy isn't natural like some of the others, one of our readers claimed that after trying many other failed repellants, DuPont Advion Ant Gel was the only thing that solved her ant problem.
Malathion
Malathion works extremely well when sprayed around the foundation of your home. And, you only need to use it about once a month in the warm weather. (However, it may have health risks for children, so be cautious about using around kids.)
